Here I sit, bored as hell, waiting for the bl🩸🩸dy bell, just like in primary school when we thought we were so clever with our little ditties. Lately, I’ve been ranting and raving about compliance training with anyone who’ll listen. What is going ON, people? Do we really think that boring people to death is the best way to get them to understand important stuff?
What’s the point of compliance training anyway? Just reducing risk? A simple tick and flick exercise to cover our backsides if something goes wrong? “Oh yes, we did the training! Oh yes, here’s the register!”
Not good enough, as my wise mother would say. Ooh, watch out, here comes my soapbox! Why does so-called “compliance training” have to be tick and flick? Why does it have to be so mind-numbingly boring? Why don’t we strive to be better?
Imagine a world where our workforce not only understood WHY the training was important, but actually showed they could apply what they learned. Instead of just sitting there like zombies, they’d be actively involved, soaking up the knowledge and putting it into practice. And here’s WHY we need to make this happen:
- People actually remember stuff when it’s interesting. It’s common sense, really. Engage their brains, and they’ll retain the information. This means they’ll actually understand those compliance regulations and use them in their everyday work.
- No one likes being bored to tears. Engaging training makes employees feel like they’re part of the process, not just robots going through the motions. This makes them WANT to learn and do the right thing.
- It’s not just about WHAT the rules are, it’s about WHY they exist. Engaging training helps people understand the reasons behind the rules, which leads to better decisions and a real culture of compliance. That means less risk for everyone.
- Let’s get practical! Interactive scenarios, real-life examples, even a bit of gamification – these help people apply what they’ve learned in a meaningful way. It’s the difference between reading about how to ride a bike and actually getting on one.
- Happy employees, happy company. When people feel like the company cares about their learning, it creates a much better atmosphere. Everyone wins.
- Boring training can be expensive in the long run. Think about the costs of non-compliance, legal issues, and having to retrain people who’ve forgotten everything. Engaging training might cost more upfront, but it saves money and depending on the training, could save lives!
- Show your employees some respect! Engaging training tells your workforce that you value their time and want them to grow. This boosts morale and makes them feel good about their jobs.
- Let’s face it, the old ways don’t work anymore. Today’s employees, especially the younger generation, expect more from their training. They want interaction, they want engagement, and they want to be challenged.
The bottom line? We need to create a culture of compliance where everyone understands the rules and wants to follow them. And that can only happen with training that’s engaging, relevant, and memorable. Let’s ditch the tick and flick and make compliance training something that actually makes a difference!
